2021.10.22 12:32 FixChance1035 Vaccines could be for another Virus?

Because vaccinated people are still getting sick from this weak virus, it's making me think that maybe these vaccines are to protect us from another virus that could spark WW3? Wiping out the Chinese and everyone else that hasn't complied.
Personally I haven't been vaccinated but because of these recent back and forths with China and Taiwan and the fact the US will fully back Taiwan in a conflict concerns me.
Are we heading for a complete war? Could this be the end of civilisation as we know it?

A Letter to Three Wives (1949) - MAP: 87.22/100
IMDb / Wikipedia / My Collection
Here I sit, in a right and proper snit, cavernous house darkened - not a single bulb burning in the place, I wanted the house to reflect my inner emotional landscape. Mrs. Lady Zedd had come out of the bedroom, dressed for work, kissed me on the head, said, “bye” and slipped out the front door. I know from long experience she only leaves this way when she’s not wanting to go, so I can’t be upset with her.
Not being sure which way to go but not wanting to just let the loneliness eat away at me, I decided to let numeric necessity pick my film, whatever it may be. Let me explain - in a ridiculous side goal to the regular movie challenge, I’m trying to ensure I’ve got at least one film for every year I have represented on the shelf, so I make a quick check of the 500 movies list of films (the very same I use for the “Best and Worst End of Month” tally) and see an unbroken line from 1950 to 2021… 71 years in film is a neat trick in and of itself. I’m seeing 1949 is needed, so 1949 it is.
I don’t have a huge pile of movies to choose from in that specific vintage but a choice was made. I know we’ve watched A Letter to Three Wives at some point in our deep dark past but only once and I couldn’t say anything about the film one way or the other - I didn’t know it when I pulled the movie from the shelf but something good was about to happen that was going to help the day get a little easier to bear.
Three married women meet on a Saturday to volunteer on a trip for disadvantaged children and are handed a letter. Deborah, Rita, and Lori Mae discover Addie Ross, a well known woman in their social circle, is moving away and she’s letting them know she’s taking one of their husbands with her. Naturally, Addie fails to say which one. Pinned into their activity, a riverboat ride and picnic, the three board the ship and try to put it out of their mind.
Imagination is a double edge sword, isn’t it? I mean, great storytelling kicks our imagination on in service to the story but jealousy can use it to conjure the worst thoughts. The film is terribly clever in how it uses both our imagination and that of the three women in the story. We’re treated to the first flashback, that of Deborah and learn that her marriage to Brad isn’t exactly doing well.
We go back in time and see Deborah feeling nervous and a little more than tipsy on the night Brad plans to introduce her to the old gang. Brad is a member of the local upper crust who, while serving his country in WW2 found and married Deborah - a farm girl who hadn’t gone and done much of anything until she joined the Naval Reserve’s Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES). The uniform is a great leveler - now that she’s a civilian once more, she’s feeling a social miss-match with Brad, and a fish-out-of-water in Brad’s hometown to boot. As the flashback soon shows, Deborah is very aware that her husband and Addie were an item in high school and the assumption was he’d return and marry her. Despite being openly greeted and warmly treated, Deborah makes an ass of herself at the social club when Addie arranges for champagne despite being late to the party.
The next flashback is less complicated - Rita’s husband, George, is an idealistic school teacher, who enjoys his work but is emasculated by Rita’s job as a radio show writer and it’s hefty paycheck.
The part is played to perfection by Kirk Douglas who conveys George’s sense of duty movingly:
I’m willing to admit that to a majority of my fellow citizens I’m a slightly comic figure… I’m a schoolteacher. That’s even worse than being an intellectual. School teachers are not only comic, they are often cold and hungry in this richest land on Earth.
Once Rita has her bosses over for dinner and its learned she’s been talking behind George’s back in hopes she could get him to quit his teaching career after arranging for a position as a radio show editor, things get tense. Apparently Rita’s personality changed once she began this position and her fear of losing the job has created problems between the couple. On top of that, we learn the dinner party fell on George’s forgotten birthday when Addie’s thoughtful gift arrives by courier. Ouch.
In the final flashback, Lora Mae’s life as a poor young woman is shown in detail. She lives with her mother and sister - not on the wrong side of the tracks but next to them, directly! There are a few scenes of the trains rocking the house like a ship at sea that are so well done, someone must have been pulling from experience right down to everyone picking up their drinks lest they spill. Lora Mae has caught the eye of her rich boss, Porter, a very direct middle-aged retail chain owner who’s smart enough to not get married a second time.
Lora Mae’s smart as a whip and plays Porter like a flute. He’s certain he wont marry again but she keeps him spun (oh those damn feminine wiles). Porter thinks Lora Mae is gold digging and she’s certain he’s just trying to buy her affection. They wind up married eventually but it’s always a contentious relationship. Naturally, Porter and Addie have known each other in the past - she was close enough to have gifted him a picture of herself that he’d kept in a silver frame on the piano.
I had little choice but to enjoy the film, adapted from a story in Cosmopolitan (that itself had been adapted from a novel). Joseph L. Mankiewics wrote and directed the film which lead to Oscars for Best Adapted Screen Play and Best Director as well as a nomination for Best Picture. Mankiewics keeps the pace on the move, the dialog snappy, and the emotions real. I was easily drawn into the story, and without giving it away, the ending was pitch perfect.
Addie is the perfect everything, especially gift giver, and while hers is the voice of the narrator, we never actually lay eyes on her - making her a perfect McGuffin too! Without actually seeing Addie, all the girls’ insecurities are pinned to a phantom and the audience’s imagination goes wild trying to imagine what this near perfect woman looks like. Each gift was a fresh insult, a reminder there was a beautiful, intelligent, and available woman out there. I’ve already said it but if I had to choose a single word to describe the film it’d be… clever.
Ok, the film done, my mood improved, I had to tip my hat to fate - basically a blind viewing of a random movie and it just happens to have, as a overarching theme, the need to appreciate your mate for who they are and what they have to give? I love it when that happens, spontaneously. I may have been missing Mrs. Lady Zedd all day and didn’t get my usual morning interaction but she’s a hard working woman who takes every opportunity to show me she cares. I’m a lucky movie dude and don’t I know it!
Side note: this whole emasculated man because his wife brings in more money garbage - how silly can you get? Mrs. Lady Zedd out foxed me in the money department in the mid-90s and my career path from there was all catch up. If I got a dollar raise, she got $1.50 until I became disabled. I had people ask me how I “coped” and ask, under their breath, if I felt like half a man. What?!? This isn’t the Bronze age - maybe we can stop using Bronze Age thinking about what a man is and what he isn’t, what do you think? How about this, we’re partners, which means we’re on the same team - her wins are our wins, plain and simple. What dangles (or doesn’t) between our legs never really matters in this situation. How do I feel knowing my wife makes more money than me?
Appreciative. :]. Now, Movie On!
