2021.11.30 07:20 LocksTheFox The Points Record and the Playoffs: A brief history
With the Revs making their playoff debut tonight after what feels like 8 years of waiting, MLS fans everywhere are anticipating what this year's New England squad can do in the postseason. As they should! They have the Coach of the Year in Bruce Arena, the Goalkeeper of the Year in Matt Turner, and will probably have the MVP in Carles Gil.
More importantly, the Revs set a new league record with 76 points on the season. But this year's playoffs have proven totally anarchic. How have previous holders of the points record held up come postseason? Let's take a look.
I'm choosing to divide this into two eras, the shootout era and the modern era, just because shootouts made things a bit wonky so it's worth examining both.
A Shield winner in an era preceding the Shield, the Mutiny's gameplan was pretty simple. Get it to Carlos "El Pibe" Valderrama, let him slip a through ball for Roy Lassiter, and hope Lassiter's timing was good. It worked in the regular season - Pibe won MVP and Lassiter the Golden Boot, Thomas Rongen won Coach of the Year, and the Mutiny were the best regular season team by a mile.
But in the playoffs, things weren't quite so smooth. Columbus, who'd squeaked into their playoff spot on the final day of the season (with a H2H win over the chasing Revs), gave them a run in the first round as the Mutiny prevailed two games to one in a best-of-3 series in which Lassiter scored 5 times.
In the Eastern Conference Final, they met up against DC, who'd juuust snuck past the MetroStars after Rob Johnson went full Leeroy Jenkins on Marco Etcheverry. Bruce Arena's United squad had been one of the few teams to give Tampa Bay trouble in the regular season, having gone 3-1 in the regular season head to head. Tampa just didn't have an answer for them in the playoffs either, as Richie Williams handcuffed Valderrama and Raul Diaz Arce went off with four of DC's six goals in a two game sweep.
Fun fact: After the season, Tampa traded the Coach of the Year to the Revs. Nick Sakiewicz, everyone.
1998 LA Galaxy - 68 Points - Lost in WCF (CHI)
Octavio Zambrano's first full season in charge of the Galaxy was a hell of a successful one. No one even came close to LA in the 1998 regular season, who had 3 of that season's top 10 goal scorers in Cobi Jones, Welton, and Mauricio Cienfuegos. They kept the momentum rolling into the playoffs by absolutely destroying Dallas in a two game sweep, including a 6-1 rout at the Rose Bowl.
In the Western Conference Finals, LA faced off against expansion side Chicago. LA had taken the season series, with two wins, a loss, and a shootout loss (draw). But the Fire were a talented team, with a squad Defender of the Year Luboš Kubík, Goalkeeper of the Year Zach Thornton, Piotr Nowak, and Chris Armas, and led by Arena's protégé, Bob Bradley.
In Game 1, Chicago struck late, with Jesse Marsch netting the winner in the 86th minute to steal a win on the road. That meant the Galaxy had to defend their home turf to force a Game 3, but they would not. Danny Pena equalized for LA just six minutes after Nowak's opener, but Fire prevailed in the shootout to complete a sweep.
With that gimmick going the way of the dodo, the 2000 season was a hyper-competitive one. The top 3 teams in the league were separated by just 3 points at the end of the season, with KC nudging Chicago for the Shield on head-to-head, the first tiebreaker at the time (under modern rules, Chicago would've won it, with one more win). While Chicago had been good for their first two seasons (and still had most of their core intact from 1998), KC's success happened almost overnight, as the 1999 Wizards were awful, finishing on just 20 points.
KC's strength was in defense, as newcomer Peter Vermes and draftee Nick Garcia and an MVP season from Tony Meola made KC an airtight squad that conceded less than a goal per game. In the attack, Preki had a new running mate in the oft-forgotten Dane Miklos Molnar.
Both teams survived some scares in the first round, and in the conference finals both survived by the skin of their teeth in Game 3. The rules at the time had it as a 3-game points setup.
In KC's semifinal round against LA, the two teams drew Game 1 at Arrowhead, but the Galaxy defended their home turf on a golden goal by Danny Califf. Molnar's penalty in Game 3 sent the tie to golden-goal extra time, where Molnar struck again to send KC through.
For Chicago, they and the MetroStars traded home wins in the first two games, setting up a winner-take-all Game 3 at Soldier Field. Chicago opened up a 2-0 lead through CJ Brown and Hristo Stoichkov, but Adolfo Valencia scored twice for Metro to equalize. Valencia had a hat trick and go-ahead goal in the second half, but it was called back on a verrrry tight offside call, and in the 88th minute, Ante Razov sent Chicago to MLS Cup on a very similar play.
The final, which pitted the league's best attack against the league's best defense, proved that defense wins championships. Molnar struck in the 11th minute, and KC held on for a 1-0 win. Molnar retired after the game, despite being just 30, which is probably the reason most have never heard of him.
2005 San Jose Earthquakes - 64 Points - Lost in WCSF (LAG)
And people are complaining there's too much chaos this year...
The 2005 season was dominated by two teams. The Revs in the East and the Quakes in the West. San Jose won the Shield by 5 points, having lost just once after the start of June. Led by goalkeeper of the year Pat Onstad and a strong CB partnership of Eddie Robinson and Danny Califf, the Quakes' airtight defense conceded 0.97 goals per game, and in attack they had weapons, most notably Dwayne De Rosario.
But that came crashing down in the playoffs. The Galaxy had basically been handed a playoff spot because they played in the West; in an era where 4 of 6 teams made the playoffs in each conference, the West teams had the benefit of having two truly awful expansion teams (RSL and Chivas) who combined for 38 points. The playoff bar, for context, was 45 points.
The Galaxy made the most of their trip, as Landon Donovan scored twice in the first leg for a 3-1 Gals win, and San Jose drew 1-1 at home to lose 4-2 on aggregate. After the season, Alexi Lalas completed his mission of killing a franchise and the personnel moved to Houston, where they'd win two straight MLS Cups, capping off a bizarre cross-franchise dynasty.
Oh, and LA won MLS Cup over the Revs, the first of three straight finals losses by New England.
2011 LA Galaxy - 67 Points - Won MLS Cup
In 2007, LA changed MLS forever by signing David Beckham. But by 2011, the glitz of that signing had worn off. The Galaxy had yet to win MLS Cup, and a narrative was starting to sink in that maybe you were better off just having a solid team instead of a couple of highly-paid gamebreakers, like the other champions of that era - 2007 Houston, 2008 Columbus, 2009 RSL, and 2010 Colorado.
The Galaxy had come close, but never got their hands on the Cup, losing on penalties in 2009 and getting upset in the 2010 semifinals by Dallas after winning the Shield. LA doubled down on big names, swapping Juan Pablo Angel out for Robbie Keane midseason. And it worked, as they buzzed through their first two playoff foes (RBNY and RSL).
The final saw them against Houston. Dynamo had to bunker due to Brad Davis's injury the previous round, but it worked for much of the game as LA was either missing chances or mistiming runs.
But in the 72nd minute, the three LA DPs combined for the only goal of the game - Beckham, to Keane, to Donovan. Houston couldn't respond, and the Galaxy had their third MLS Cup. They'd win two more before this dynasty concluded.
2017 Toronto - 69 Points (nice) - Won MLS Cup
This was a revenge tour done to absolute perfection.
Toronto had dominated MLS Cup 2016, but couldn't take their chances (and weren't helped by Stefan Frei's iconic save) and ended up losing on penalties.
Solution: Come back supercharged. The core of Toronto's 2016 squad remained intact, with DPs Sebastian Giovinco, Jozy Altidore, and Michael Bradley surrounded with solid role players. The club added Victor Vazquez to bolster the attack, and Chris Mavinga to shore up defense.
That did the trick. Toronto slaughtered the league in the regular season, with no one even within ten points of them to win the Shield. They won the Canadian Championship on Giovinco's last-gasp winner in the second leg against Montreal. The MLS Cup was all they needed to complete MLS's first domestic treble.
TFC survived a scare in a conference semifinal against the Red Bulls. Toronto won the road leg 2-1 at Red Bull Arena on goals by Vazquez and Giovinco, meaning they just needed a draw at home to move on. Halftime of the second leg saw Altidore sent off (as was RBNY's Sacha Kljestan), and while Metro leveled the aggregate through BWP in the second half, Toronto advanced on away goals.
The Reds then downed a highly-emotional Columbus (remember, this was shortly after That Announcement) in the conference final, with Altidore scoring the lone goal in the entire tie and setting up a rematch with Seattle in MLS Cup.
Through the hour mark, Toronto had yet to break through. Was history repeating itself again? Lolnope. Altidore was sprung in the 67th minute and slotted it home to give Toronto the lead, and Vazquez added a stoppage time dagger to complete the domestic treble.
2018 Red Bull New York - 71 Points - Lost in ECF (ATL)
For my money, this is the greatest Shield race of all time. It just doesn't get any better than seeing two heavyweights - Metro and Atlanta - slugging it out for regular season supremacy. A late season 2-0 win over the Five Stripes at RBA vaulted Red Bull back into the chase, and on the final day their win over Orlando coupled with Toronto crushing Atlanta snagged Metro the shield.
In the conference semis, the Red Bulls lost their playoff opener 1-0 in Columbus, but a late brace back at RBA by Daniel Royer saw them through 3-1 on aggregate. That set up the destined showdown. The two heavyweights of the regular season, now playing with the biggest stakes.
But with Best XI as a fullback defender Kemar Lawrence out for the first leg with a late knock, manager Chris Armas (who took over midseason after the RB mothership shuffled Jesse Marsch out of town) overthought the tactics, and Tito Villalba's late goal in the first leg gave Atlanta a 3-0 lead heading to RBA, and it was pretty much already over. Tim Parker's stoppage time goal in that second leg was mere consolation. New York hasn't played a playoff game at RBA since.
2019 LAFC - 72 Points - Lost in WCF (SEA)
One of the most aesthetically pleasing MLS teams, ever. And in the regular season, LAFC backed up that style with substance, racking up 72 points. Carlos Vela put up probably the single most dominant season by an individual in MLS ever, with 34 goals and 15 assists, and had a nice sidekick in Diego Rossi (16 goals). The rest of the roster was rock solid, with steady Walker Zimmerman leading the backline and the midfield trio of Eduard Atuesta, Mark-Anthony Kaye, and Latif Blessing providing a solid engine.
And they opened the postseason with a win over the Galaxy! The one big thing the Galaxy had on LAFC in that time was their dominance of El Trafico, but when the stakes were highest, it was the new kids that rose to the occasion, prevailing in a 5-3 thriller behind braces from Vela and Adama Diomande.
But perhaps LAFC got a bit too hyped after that El Trafico, because Brian Schmetzer and Seattle played them like a harp in the Western Conference finals, absolutely abusing the absence of Kaye and a horrorshow from Atuesta (his free kick goal notwithstanding) to a 3-1 win en route to their second MLS Cup. And that turned out to be as good as it got for that iteration of LAFC.
2021 New England Revolution - 73 Points - ???
So that brings us to today. The Revs are hosting NYC with a spot in the ECF against Philly on the line. They haven't played in nearly a month due to their first round bye (and pushed back even further by the NFL using Gillette on Sunday, the bastards). Will the Revs rise to the occasion and provide a showing of how they broke the record? Or will they fall under the pressure (and rust) and end up like 2019 LAFC?
Only time will tell.

2021.11.30 07:20 redditor432167 Lurking
It has been talked about a lot on this subreddit that Colleen (or any other Ballinger) may be lurking on here. This is definitely a possibility as Colleen being a narcissist probably Googles herself often and might have stumbled across this subreddit. It’s also suspicious when we raise an issue and they address it in the next vlog. However, there is a possibility that Colleen and the Ballingers don’t know this subreddit exists.
After some searching on Reddit, it’s clear that Colleen hasn’t made an account with ‘Ballinger’ in the username. My best guess is that she has either made a secretive username or she’s using Reddit without an account.
I’m curious to know how many people believe the Ballingers lurk here.

Confetti is currently my lowest level because I just brought her in to replace the Cosplay Pikachu that died to a high roll Assurance from Archie's Sharpedo. Wasn't planning on keeping that Pikachu anyway tho. I'm trying to evolve Golbat asap, has a soothe bell already

So I'm fairly new to the game and just unlocked access level 14, which gives you the option to play ranked battles. However it says that only tier X ships can participate in ranked. I was really excited about being able to play ranked so I'm kinda bummed out since the max iv got is tier IVs at the moment.
